Born Wild
Born on August 8, 1947, in Southwest Georgia to Florry (Flo) and Mack McFadden, Pat’s remarkable journey began as the precocious only child of two hardworking and enterprising parents.
Mack, a sharpshooter from World War I and a moonshiner during Prohibition, instilled in Pat a sense of resourcefulness and self-reliance.
Florry, one of the original “Rosie the Riveters” during World War II, inspired his strong work ethic and determination.
Together, they raised a boy who would grow into a man determined to leave the world better than he found it.

Nature Center Beginnings
In 1999, alongside his life partner Angela Hagen and friend Raymond Wilson, Pat founded the Lokchasassa Wilderness Project—now known as the McFadden Nature Center.
This 1,240-acre sanctuary stands as a testament to his commitment to preserving native wildlife and ecosystems. Pat’s hands-on efforts to restore the property were monumental, from clearing invasive species and repairing wetlands to creating habitats for birds, fish, and other wildlife.
His vision for the center was rooted in his love for nature and his belief in providing children—particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds—with opportunities to learn, explore, and dream.
The McFadden Nature Center carries forward Pat’s legacy, offering a place for children and families to experience the wonders of the natural world and to dream beyond their surroundings. Through conservation, education, and community programs, the center embodies Pat’s vision of a brighter, better world for future generations.
